Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Study: 2022 Conference Puerto Rico

Baritone Colin Levin and Evan Fein present a recital of Scandinavian art song, including works by Grieg, Sibelius, Lund, Jórunn Viðar, Jón Leifs, and others, to complement Dr. Levin’s keynote address on his research in this field.
“The meeting is being held in Puerto Rico to elevate research and discussion of colonial and postcolonial studies, to engage with Caribbean-Scandinavian artists, and to build connections with Scandinavianists and medieval studies scholars at the University of Puerto Rico – Río Piedras. The keynote speakers are visual artists La Vaughn Belle (Christiansted, St. Croix) and Jeannette Ehlers (Copenhagen), creators of the work “I Am Queen Mary.” The Gallery :Pública in San Juan’s Santurce neighborhood will open an exhibition with recent work by La Vaughn Belle and Jeannette Ehlers during the conference. Gallary :Pública, SASS, the Danish Arts Foundation, and the American Scandinavian Foundation invite conference participants to the opening. Transportation will be provided to all. Puerto Rican and Caribbean-Scandinavian connections will be further developed by Maribeth Polhill (U. Puerto Rico) and Nahir Otaño Gracia (U. New Mexico) in plenary lectures. An excursion to St. Croix to study the island’s colonial history with Denmark is offered after the conference. Finally, conference streams and presentations will critically explore colonial and postcolonial entanglements of the Caribbean and the Nordic region. You may also wish to check out the January issue of News & Notes, which provides further response to the question.” —SASS Conference website

“Songs of the Open Road” Premieres at Wayne State College

The premiere selection, “Songs of the Open Road” by Evan Fein, was commissioned through a grant provided by WSC. This work was composed from late Fall 2020 into Spring 2021, in the heart of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I’m very happy with how this work turned out,” explains Fein. “It’s full of hope and optimism yet acknowledging something distressing in the recent past. I know Trio Mezzklarno will breathe life into it!”

Fein, originally from Ohio, works at The Julliard School in New York City.

“A Red, Red Rose,” composed by WSC Associate Professor Matthew Haakenson, was written specifically for the Trio. This gentle, lyrical piece celebrates a pure love as depicted in the 1794 Robert Burns poem by the same name.

“What lips my lips have kissed, and where, and why,” by Kurt Knecht of Kansas City, Mo., was commissioned through a WSC grant explicitly for the Trio. Reflecting the 1920 poem by Edna St. Vincent Milay, this composition examines the process of aging, looking at what was and what never will be again. It is sometimes harsh and jarring, and sometimes tender and lyrical.

“Along the River,” by composer and professor Rick Sowash of Ohio, draws on poetry from James Joyce’s “Chamber Music” first published in 1907. This lush, lyrical piece exploits the distinct timbres of each instrument in charming, and often unexpected, combination.
