Luke Severn & Evan Fein in Recital (Bendigo)

  • Bengido Bank Theatre 50 View Street Bendigo, VIC, 3550 Australia (map)

Bendigo Symphony Orchestra’s Artistic Director, Luke Severn, is joined by American composer and pianist Evan Fein for a recital including Brahms' evergreen E Minor Cello Sonata and the World Premiere of Evan's Second Cello Sonata. Luke and Evan have performed together throughout Australia and the USA and after a hiatus over the last 2 years, they're tremendously excited to perform together once again.

The program entitled ASPECTS is themed on the ideas of simultaneous prospective and retrospective reflection. The first work featured is Evan’s Cello Sonata No. 2. Composed at the beginning of 2020 especially for Luke, the Sonata is finally receiving its long-awaited premiere on this tour. The work itself looks both forward and back harkening to shared experiences and a love of the romantic style of Brahms, as well as bringing in Evan’s effervescent and contemporary character.

The second work on the program is an old favourite of the cello literature, Brahms’ First Cello Sonata. This work also represents looking both to the future and the past. Brahms was greatly interested in the music of J.S. Bach and this work combines the older baroque style that he was so enthralled by with his own very forward-thinking style of the “new” romantic era.
